Considering that all of these writing samples were selected from the 12th grade level, I think that they were rather poorly written on the whole. At the 12th grade level, students should know the difference between the words their and there, they should know how to spell most words correctly, and they should be fairly well spoken. I was somewhat surprised at a most of these samples because of the clear lack of grammatical knowledge. At this level, students should be able to write a cohesive essay and should have the skills necessary to succeed in college.

    STEP # 2:
Grading these prompts was very surprising. I noticed the level of comprehension was at grade 12, although I feel the knowledge capacity of the students was much lower. There were many simple grammatical errors that I feel a 12th grade level individual should not be making. This made me realize how difficult the grading process can be. I now feel sorry for the teachers that have to grade papers that look like this. As well, I feel the experts in this grading system were not as critical as they should have been with some of the papers. The mistakes made by these students are clearly some that should never be made at such a high level of understanding.

While grading these prompts i realized that everyone does not have the gift of writing. Going over these made me a little upset because there is no way that seniors in high school should have such poor grammar skills. Overall, a few of the prompts looked as if the students put forth effort and cared about the assignment.

  8. Step 2: Reading these papers made me wonder if they were really papers from students in the 12 grade and if they were they were poorly constructed but knowing the work of a 12th grader this could be what they provided for you to grade but other than that i thought it was a fun experience and it made me feel important grading these papers.

At first, I thought these so-called prompts/essays were mmistaken to even be written by someone over the age of 15. The wording was awful. The structure was pitiful, and it seemed as if it was at an elementary school level. The thing that stood out to me was the grammatical errors. I thought that at a 12th grade level, it could've been more vivid.

Step 2: This assignment was very annoying. It is very sad that not only a 12th grader writes at ths level, but also that they would be admitted into the 12th grade while writing at this level. I feel bad for areas with such a low level of education. The sentence structure was awful and the grammatical errors were hard to count. And lets not start on some of the handwriting. I had to read the interpretaion at the bottom for most of these papers.

STEP 2: This assignment was somewhat saddening. It was really hard for me to read some of those writing prompts and not show some kind of emotion. It’s still hard for me to believe that those were actually written by 12th graders. It’s also hard for me to believe that they were actually promoted to the 12th grade. Even though this assignment made me a bit sad, it also opened my eyes. There are kids out there in the world who need our help. I belive that as their peers we shouldn't be so judgemental, but try and be more helpful. These kids may be going through things within the home, so they're not really being the proper education. Take the movie "Precious" for example. I feel for these students, because believe it or not, we have friends who write and speak the exact same way.

These writing samples were disappointing. The school system has clearly failed these kids as no one ever taught them how to communicate their thoughts, spell, or organize an essay in all their 13 years of formal education. These are essential skills for most successful people. A student this far behind this late in life would be hard to remediate and bring up to grade level. I wonder what demographic these kids fit and what situations they come from. It makes me mad that these individuals slipped through the cracks and no one cares what will happen to them in the long-term. It boggles my mind that teachers and school systems are okay with letting this happen.

    Step #2
I only saw a few that were decent. Most of the writing prompts seemed to be written by someone really young. There were many mistakes and some were poorly written. Honestly, if these were written by seniors, picked, what-ever, they were awful and embarassing to share if I were them. Seniors are expected to write at a certain level, this did not show the writers' abilities what-so-ever. At a 12th grade level you should have mastered capitilazation, simple spelling, and especially punctuation!

I think that some of the papers written were quite ridiculous. I believe that being a senior in high school, you should know by reading a sentence if it sounds right or not. Proof-reading is everyone should do, because you realize some sentences do not flow correctly and/or notice grammatical errors. To be honest, I hated reading the stories due to the fact that just about all of them had so many errors it gave me a headache. From reading these, It really opens my eyes to how poorly some kids know how to write. I believe this is a problem and these kids should be simply tutored :)

First off, the handwriting was awful on most of these papers. At a quick glance, that was the first thing I noticed. As I thoroughly read the papers, it was obvious that most of these students were not able to write well, thought-out paper. There were many run-on sentances and lack of commas. The authors of these papers need to study more.

Considering that these papers were suppose to be written on a 12th grade level, shows that some people really lack the proper way to write a paper. Once you reach your 12th grade year you should know whether a sentence sound complete or inadequate. There were some good papers with few errors, but overall together in a group these papers were horrible.

    Overall Reaction:
The prompts were very poorly written considering the authors were seniors in High School. This prompts show that they were just writing from the top of their heads and didn't really plan anything out before writing them. They were written with no real plot or sequence. Overall the papers lacked grammar and wirting skills.

In my opinion, these writing prompts were every High School teacher's nightmare. I mean if this is what some seniors are writing in High School then they're making me look like a rocket scientist. The grammar usage was poor, the vocabulary was on a middle school level, and the formulation of a simple paragraph couldn't even be executed. It seemed as though these teenagers simply sporadically slopped a bunch of sentences together. I was thoroughly disappointed to even be in the same grade catergory with seniors who produce this mediocre material. If children are our future, then God bless America.

I honestly think it is sad to see people write this way. What makes it worse is that there are people who speak like this on a daily basis. It is pointless and ignorant. What is this world of widely used Ebonics coming to? -_-

By reading this i believe that this student really should have proof-read this before they turned their paper in. I believe that a senior student would have higher expectations in their writing skills. Overall i did not like the story and had poor paragraph structure.

It was shocking to see such an immense decay in writing from people that are my age. I guess I'm thankful for taking advantage of having such a good education. Maybe the writers have a learning disablity that has not been recognized yet. I definatley would not jump to conclusions and say that these people are less educated than me or dumb. Some just werent gifted in writing and may be brilliant in other areas of work and life.
